Our Story

Discover Hugo's Culinary Journey at Pizzeria Avanti!​ From dishwasher to owner, Hugo's passion for culinary arts propelled him forward.​In 2012, the original Avanti Restaurant closed its doors, paving the way for an opportunity. With the blessings of the owners, Hugo seized the reins and embarked on a culinary adventure, giving birth to Pizzeria Avanti. With his visionary outlook and seasoned expertise, Hugo stepped into the role of owner, ready to craft a unique dining experience.​ Pizzeria Avanti, builds upon the legacy of the esteemed Restaurant Avanti. It has quickly garnered acclaim and recognition within the culinary landscape. The torch was passed from the original founder, Paul Gates, to Luis Martinez, and finally to Hugo Martinez Silva, who wholeheartedly embraced the responsibility with passion and determination.​ Specializing in a variety of mouthwatering Italian cuisines, Pizzeria Avanti is nestled in the Palm Center on the vibrant street of Mission here in Santa Cruz. The restaurant is a beloved culinary destination, drawing locals and visitors alike to savor the delectable flavors crafted by Hugo and his talented team. ​Hugo's journey exemplifies the power of hard work, perseverance, and a genuine love for the culinary arts. Through his dedication and the support of his loyal patrons, he transformed a humble dishwasher role into a thriving restaurant that continues to leave a lasting impression on the Santa Cruz culinary scene.

In the Kitchen

  "The pizza inhaling a delicious creation of portobello mushrooms, organic asparagus, olives and feta—are always deeply satisfying. Did I mention that not only do Avant’s pizzas showcase perfect thin crusts, but the dough itself is addictively delicious? Old World pizza made by New World experts.  

But the salad specials—always featuring what’s just come into the farmers markets—are remarkable. Beets, avocados, shaved fennel, arugula, and satiny vinaigrettes adorn my latest favorites. The lamb burger has a following, as does the remarkable lasagna and the house signature Brussels sprouts appetizer, dotted with squash, pancetta and pumpkin seeds. Last week we split a strawberry pie dessert and moaned our way through ripe berries, a cookie crust and a sexy layer of whipped cream."
